Pioneer Surgical just announced the first human use of nanOss Bioactive 3D. The procedures were perfomed by Dr. Nicholas Matagaras at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers, Illinois.

The product is a three-dimensional shaped biologic bone graft which utilizes proprietary nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite as well as a collagen-based biopolymer to promote bone growth in posterolateral spine.

Dr. Mataragas provided OTW with a statement that said: “mixing these strips with bone marrow aspirate provides for an easily moldable and compressible product for ideal fusion in the posterolateral spine.”

Shane Ray, general manager of Pioneer’s biologics division, said three-dimensional shapes are popular in spine surgery. “With this addition, we now have one of the most extensive biologic portfolios on the market.”

Bioactive 3D is an addition to the company’s flagship biologic bone graft product line, nanOss Bioactive.

The company’s website describes nanOss Bioactive 3D as “a resorbable porous calcium phosphate bone void filler that provides a scaffold for the in-growth of new bone. nanOss Bioactive 3D is an osteoconductive implant with an interconnected porosity similar to human cancellous bone. The product is a semi-rigid three dimensional construct that consists of porous hydroxyapatite granules suspended within porous gelatin-based foam matrix. When hydrated with bone marrow aspirate, nanOss Bioactive 3D becomes a compressible and elastic sponge that allows the shape of the implant to conform to the defect maximizing direct contact with viable host bone. nanOss Bioactive 3D is provided sterile by prior exposure to gamma irradiation and intended for single use only.”

According to a January 5 press release announcing the start of the clinical phase of the Bioactive 3D, the company now has a full line of synthetic bone grafts as well as human tissue products including machined lateral, traditional lumbar and cervical allograft, human demineralized bone matrix (DBM) bone grafts, as well as bone graft delivery accessories.
